Maruti is finally ready to enter the electric SUV segment in India with the launch of the eVitara on 2 December. The model is already on sale in countries like the UK and Japan, and production for the Indian market is underway at Maruti’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. With the launch date confirmed, here’s a clear look at what buyers can expect from Maruti’s first all-electric SUV when it arrives.

Battery Options and Performance

For India, the eVitara is expected to follow the same format as its international version, offering 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery pack choices. Both versions will use a front-wheel-drive setup at launch. The larger battery variant supports an all-wheel-drive configuration in global markets, but Maruti will introduce that option in India later.

Power output differs based on the battery size. The 49 kWh model is likely to produce 144 hp, while the 61 kWh FWD version should deliver 174 hp. The most powerful configuration internationally is the 61 kWh AWD variant, which generates 184 hp, thanks to its dual-motor layout.

Driving range also varies. The 61 kWh FWD model is the most efficient, offering up to 428 km (WLTP) on a single charge. The 49 kWh version can cover around 344 km, while the AWD setup achieves roughly 394 km.

In everyday use, the eVitara is expected to offer a smooth and comfortable drive. The 61 kWh FWD version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, which works well for daily commuting. Those who want a stronger punch will appreciate the AWD variant, which completes the same sprint in 7.4 seconds.

Features and Safety Technology

Maruti is equipping the eVitara with a premium feature set to match its flagship positioning. Internationally, the SUV comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, a glass roof, Infinity by Harman audio, a 360-degree camera, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat. Other useful additions include a wireless charger, dual screens for instrumentation and infotainment, rear privacy glass, and keyless entry and start.

The SUV also supports connected car functions through the Suzuki Connect platform. In crash tests abroad, the eVitara has earned a 4-star Euro NCAP rating, highlighting its solid safety package. Standard safety features include ESP, hill hold control, hill descent control, seven airbags, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. A full suite of ADAS features is also part of the package.

Practical and Family-Friendly Cabin

Maruti has designed the eVitara to appeal to family car buyers. The cabin offers good space overall, though taller passengers in the rear may find headroom slightly limited. To improve comfort, the rear seats feature reclining backrests and sliding adjustment, allowing passengers to customise legroom.

These sliding seats also help modify the boot space, which ranges from 238 litres to 306 litres depending on the configuration. The India-spec model is expected to offer a more practical boot layout thanks to changes in the storage and under-floor tray design.

Expected Price and Competition

Pricing will play a major role in the eVitara’s reception. Maruti is likely to position the SUV at around ₹20 lakh for the base 49 kWh variant, with the 61 kWh FWD model expected to cost close to ₹25 lakh. Once launched, the eVitara will compete with several upcoming and existing electric SUVs, including the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE.6, Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, and the Tata Sierra EV.

Final Thoughts

The Maruti eVitara marks an important step for the brand as it enters India’s fast-growing electric vehicle space. With multiple battery options, strong feature offerings, connected technology, and a focus on practical family use, the eVitara has the potential to attract a wide range of buyers. If Maruti manages to price it competitively, the eVitara could quickly become one of the most popular electric SUVs in the country.
